Traveling with Dan was pleasant, eventful and rich of personal experiences: this is twice as much remarkable for me, because I always travel alone, and like to plan my trip by myself. Dan has rare 'people-skill', both with the 'locals' (he can struck a pleasant conversation with anybody, get precious local information, and get accepted in everybody's home when necessary) and with clients (he always there when you need him, and he discretely disappears when it is the time for you to have the space of a 'personal' experience, either with people in the street or with the beauty of the environment). These are the most important qualities for a guide. The trip organisation was seamless, and his personal attention to my satisfaction and enjoyment was heartwarming. His network - drivers, hotels, restaurants.. - is excellent, and everybody loves him. He has special connections with Peruvian people living in remote villages, he introduced me to some of them, and shared with the locals moments of their life. Priceless, for me. The destinations were all well selected, a special experience for each of them. I came back with lots of beautiful photos, and desire to be back soon.
Peru - a beautifully bespoke fortnight
We were a group of 4 friends, on this big holiday to Peru. The itinerary was put together by Dan Søby of Andean Photo Expeditions in partnership with Marius Coetzee of Oryx Photo Tours. It was my first time in South America and I couldn’t have asked for more - we did stuff that was on the tourist trail...Machu Picchu, Cusco, the Amazon rainforest ...and a lot of stuff that was off the beaten track - mountain vistas with no other tourists in sight, a visit to a Quechua family in Pampallacta (definitely a highlight for me), a flight over the Nazca Lines (surprisingly this is not on every visitor’s agenda), and some rainforest photography with members of the Machiguenga tribe.
Dan was an amazing guide and a fab photography tutor, pointing out angles, checking our camera settings - and making me see composition in a new light (pun unintended 😜).
Our transport arrangements were perfect and we had some wonderful drivers - Bruce, in particular, who safely manoeuvred Lima traffic, the narrow streets of Cuzco and the unpaved tracks of the Sacred Valley with consummate skill.
I can’t recommend Dan and Andean Photo Expeditions highly enough, and look forward to their expanding their itineraries beyond Peru and Bolivia. I’m sure we’ll be back.
Extraordinary Photographic and Cultural Tour!
Extraordinary experience! Dan and Alex are excellent guides offering friendly and professional travel and photographic expertise. I enjoyed every moment of this expedition through the Sacred Valley, Amazon jungle and Machu Picchu. I was a photography beginner myself and this trip offered everything I needed to learn about photography and the true essence of the Peruvian culture. This company was exceptionally organized, knowledgeable, punctual and very reliable. Highly recommend this team! Not only did Alex and Dan offer great expertise as photographers and guides but they really connect with the region, people and culture on a deep and personal level, offering a unique and lovely experience. I highly recommend this company for anyone interested in sustainable travel, photography or just simply wanting an authentic Peruvian culture personal tour. We also had excellent and friendly drivers and the most beautiful scenes to capture! This is a must for anyone traveling to Peru - experienced or newbies!
The expedition and Alex were awesome! The locations that Alex has picked out are off the beaten path and and not cluttered with tourist and unnecessary noise to distract your eye in your photo. His patience and understanding of photography go above and beyond what is expected. I has hit hard by altitude sickness and Alex made sure I was able to complete me excursion alive and with all the great shots I was trying to get. I will definitely be coming back to Andean Photo Expeditions again as their trips continue to grow around the region.
Best Peru photo experience
Andean photo expedition’s customized photo tour allowed us to experience Peru in a unique way. Dan is knowledgable, experienced and passionate about Peru. Highlights of our trip was a visit to a Quechua family and flying over the Nazca Lines.
Best tour by far
First off, Dan is amazing! My husband and I can’t say enough great things about this tour. We learned a lot about photography, but even more about Lima and the culture from a well versed local. This tour is a must for history buffs, photography enthusiasts to professionals, and travelers of any age! We stopped for coffee breaks, lunch, and gelato. He goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is accommodated! I wish my husband and I could rate this 10 stars!
Not To Be Missed! Best Tour of Lima!
My mother and I had a private day tour of Lima and it was wonderful from beginning to end. I am a photographer from the States, and Dan offered me a peek into the daily lives of locals at the market, in the streets, with the local fishermen, and above the city. I welcomed his expert advice on camera settings and points of view. My mother, who is not a photographer, also loved camera hints to produce fantastic photos with her iPhone. Lunch in China Town with the refreshing Inca Kola is not to be missed. Muchas gracias Dan! Can't wait for another adventure. If you spend any time in Lima (or other Peruvian locales), find out what adventures are in store for you with Andean Photo Expeditions. Que Bueno!
The team respond quickly, answering queries you may have, such as do you need to tip (everyone is paid well, so no, unless you really appreciate the tour) or do you need an SLR camera (no, whatever goes - except drones, there are several no fly zones). Our private driver was excellent, safe and fun. Service is door to door. The tour provides more than ample time to take photos at each spot and if you want Alex will take photos of you too. Doesn't matter if you are a professional photographer, keen amateur, point and shoot merchant, or just doing it for the 'gram on a smartphone, Alex was keen to help us get the photos we wanted, sharing his enthusiasm for photography and Peru. Can't recommend this company enough, wish we had more time in Cusco to take another of their tours. Thank you Alex and Ronal (almost certainly spelt the last wrong) for a fabulous day.
We went out for the day with Alex (leaving from Urubamba, which was very convenient). It was a great way to tour the Sacred Valley without having to do any of the planning, and the spots were also more unique than the typical tour that everyone else was offering. Alex was awesome - super cool, easy to chat with- he gave me a crash course on how to improve my shots (I am at the super amateur photography level) but even better, he graciously worked in a lifestyle photo shoot of my husband and I throughout the day. I got the images 24 hours later and couldn't be happier with them- what an amazing souvenir from our trip! We're looking into an Argentina/Chile trip next year and I've got my fingers crossed that Andean Photo Expeditions expands into that area by then! Highly highly recommend this experience, whether you are into photography or just using a cell phone camera.
My best friend and I did a half day Salt Mines, Mountains and Farmers tour with Alex. It was an awesome day and we highly recommend this experience to anyone who has a spare day or two in Cusco or surrounds. Alex picked us up from the hotel and took us to some beautiful sights and locations we wouldn't have thought to visit on our own. He's got plenty of insider tips (including the location of the most delicious empanadas!). Alex took some incredible photos of us along the way, and also gave us advice on how to take our own photos using our smart phones. I love that Alex and Andean Photo Expenditions are passionate about responsible travel and believe in creating relationships with the local community. It was really beautiful to see his friendships with everyone we met along the way. Thank you Alex - you're a gem! We had such a wonderful time!
